The Dead Sea (in Arabic: البحر الميت; in Hebrew: ים המלח?, Yam HaMelah, literally "sea of salt") is - properly - a lake located in the Near East between Israel, Jordan and the West Bank, in the historical region -Geographical of Palestine. Called Asfaltide in ancient times, the Dead Sea is located in the deepest depression on Earth, generated over the millennia as a result of the evaporation of its waters not compensated by those of the tributaries, which is also the cause of its well-known high salinity. Currently the water level of the upper (northern) basin is about 415 m below sea level and the gap continues to increase, given that the level inevitably continues to fall, also posing the problem of its possible disappearance in the medium-long term term. The salt of the Dead Sea has a higher salinity than all the seas of the world, 7-8 times higher than that of a normal sea. The extraordinary feature is the presence of magnesium chloride (32%), potassium (25%) and bromine, all components with very important properties for our skin. Already in the 2nd century AD Claudius Galen, a famous Greek doctor of the time, recommended treatments in the Dead Sea to those suffering from rheumatism. In addition to this, the salts act against acne, muscle pain, seborrhea, itching, dry skin and also against cellulite.
