Maras Salt

Maras Salt from Peru has a pink color and very compact and slightly moist medium grains. The salt pans from which it is extracted date back to pre-Inca times and are located in the "Sacred Valley" at over 3,000 meters above sea level. Here many "tanks" or small natural pools are fed by a stream of saline water which is then evaporated to obtain this salt with a decidedly captivating colour. Due to the position in which these water basins are located, the collection of salt is still today a manual process which is done by the local inhabitants who, with the help of mules, transport it to the collection centers where it is then selected and packaged.

In the Kitchen : It is excellent as a finishing salt for ready meals, where its crunchy crystals and delicate flavor can be appreciated, such as for grilled meat and fish.
