      Maras del Peru salt has a pink color and very compact and slightly moist medium grains. Ideal for garnishing dishes and for cooking meat, fish and vegetables. The salt pans from which it is extracted date back to the pre-Inca era and are located in the "Sacred Valley" at over 3,000 meters above sea level. Here many "tubs" or small natural pools are fed by a torrent of saline water which is then evaporated to obtain this salt with a decidedly captivating color. Due to the position in which these water basins are located, the salt collection is still today a manual process that is done by the locals who, with the help of mules, transport it to the collection centers where it is then selected and packaged.
