Ginger

Originally from South Asia and cultivated in ancient China and India now also in other tropical countries, it was the first spice imported into Europe. The aroma is obtained from the rhizomes which are sold fresh or dried, ground or candied. It has the ability to fight nausea and vomiting, it's a powerful painkiller that can relieve rheumatic pains, contrasts colds and is a valid support for headaches. The flavor is strong and spicy, the powdered one has a more pungent aroma than the dried one. It is used whole in pickles, minced in meat dishes and on grilled meat or fish dishes. The fresh, whole root is used to make ginger ale, in jams, ground up it is used in puddings, breads, biscuits and other sweets.
